The 2010 FA Community Shield Wrap-up (The Owen Edition)

Traditionally, the FA Community Shield (formerly known as the Charity Shield) is the so-called “Curtain-Raiser” to the English Premier League Season. Since, Chelsea won the PL and the FA Cup last season, PL Runners-up Manchester United were again their opponents this year.

Some bits and pieces about the match:

Star Sports originally showed in the Team Sheet that Michael Owen now wears the #14 shirt for MU and Tomasz Kusazcak is now #7. This got me ubelievably excited, considering #14 is my fave number, until the players went out the tunnel and I saw that MO is still #7. Why get my hopes up like that, Star Sports?!

The Chelsea fans incessantly booed Wayne Rooney, stemming perhaps from England’s disastrous WC2010 campaign. The Man Utd fans promptly retaliated by booing John Terry.

Speaking of John Terry, he kept MO in his defensive pocket for the 1st Half. I swore high and low that I’d hate him for eternity if he ends up injuring him. Thank heavens he didn’t.

Javier Hernandez, a.k.a. Chicharito, scored a bizarre but amazingly funny goal. He tried to shoot the ball in but it ended up hitting his face on the way in. See giffage below courtesy of the gals from OF:

MU ended up winning, 3-1. I shan’t discuss the rest of the goals anymore as I was seriously already too sleepy by then and was just waiting to see the Awarding of the trophy.

England Manager Fabio Capello watched the match from the stands. I somehow missed it but based on pics, I think Capello and MO politely ignored each other before the Awarding Ceremony yet again (this happened last year also, in the 2009 Community Shield match)

Stand-in Captain Nemanja Vidic finally sheds his Bitchface and smiles as he hoists the Shield. Paul Scholes’ Bitchface in the pic below is priceless, though. Oh, and he was MOTM.

So there you have it. Interestingly, statistics say that the Community Shield winners always go on to win the Premier League title the same season. Will this still hold true? Well, we’d all have to wait and see until May of 2011.
